Website Navigation

Your sites navigation can play a fundamental role in the success of your site, for many different reasons. You may have a great looking, all singing, all dancing menu which is great for your visitors but to the search engine spiders it is impossible to crawl. You need to make sure right from the beginning of your websites life that the menu is right!

Search engines spiders cannot follow the same kind of links that a visitor can. They find JavaScript, links within forms and frames very hard to crawl and if you have one of these forms of navigation in place then you may find that the search engine spiders do not crawl your site at all.

Make the page accessible

It is important that each page of your site is accessible by the search engine spiders because you may have valuable, relevant content not being used to determine your rankings. One good way to improve the open architecture of your site is to add a sitemap; be this an XML sitemap or an html one. Sitemaps offer a road map for the search engine spiders to follow to every page of your site and they are particularly useful if you have a large site with regular content updates.

Make is simple to use

By offering visitors a concise site architecture and navigation you are making their time on your site as easy and user friendly as possible. Your navigation should be open and informative. Links should be appropriately labelled to make it obvious to the user where the link will end up.

By creating navigation that is simple and easy to use you are creating an open site architecture which is friendly to both the search engine spiders and your visitors.
