Search expressions, or keywords, refer to the text which search engine users type in to find the site they are looking for. They are crucial in the process of optimising a site and all SEO should start from a well researched collection of keywords.
There are many ways to search for potential keywords. There are software programmes on the market to help you with this process and all are slightly different. The three biggest keyword finders are Wordtracker, Keyword Universe and WebCEO. All three of these services source data from search engines for millions of different keywords. This data then helps the webmaster to identify trends which can be followed when building a search engine friendly site.
Most of the time a webmaster will have a pretty decent idea of what keywords they want their site to appear for. If you are a builder you can take it for granted that you need to appear for search expressions such as “building services” or “extensions”. But using keyword finding services could open up other avenues such as “ground excavations” or “loft conversions”.
Obvious keywords tend to be very competitive and as time goes on more and more sites appear and try to compete for them. The key to successful and productive keywords is finding the keywords that are getting a lot of searches and have a low level of competing websites.
Once you have picked the keywords you will need to spread them through your site. They need to appear in the content, the titles and the architecture. As well as the on site implications you also need to think about keywords when conducting off page marketing also. If you choose the right keywords and use them well, then you can’t fail.
