I’m sure many of you have heard the expression “Content is king” before and it so well known for a reason. The content of your website plays a huge role in search engine rankings and it is the fundamental part of a website’s success.
The search engine spiders are not as advanced as you might think. Until only recently all a search engine spider could read was text. They have improved over the years and can now read more complicated media like flash but the overriding source of a search engines knowledge is text. With this in mind the content of a website should largely be text.
But, too much text in a site can drive away visitors and make a site look boring. A decent site will have a balance between the two. There needs to be other information such as picture, film, audio, interactive content, quizzes and forums. It is this balance of search engine friendly content and user friendly content which leads to a site performing well both in the search engines and with sales.
The content that you add to your site should always be relevant to the overall theme of your site and keywords. By adding irrelevant content you are confusing the search engine as to the nature of your site. One of the easiest ways to increase the amount of relevant content is to add a blog to your site. A blog allows you to easily add content in the form of a diary. Another great way to build content is to add a forum where site visitors can discuss issues which relate to your services or products.
By making sure you treat “content as king” you can’t fail to provide the search engines with plenty of juicy data for them to index and reward you for !
