Destination Content

The phrase “destination content” refers to the content which you link to from your own site. It is quite often considered wrong to link out to other websites for a number of reasons. The main argument being that you do not want to offer your site visitors a way to leave your site. Another argument is that you will loose PageRank by outward bound links. More recently, Google has been coming down hard on paid links for PageRank manipulation so you should be careful when linking out from your site.

Relevant Content

Destination content should be relevant and useful to your visitor. That is why most outward bound links are to sites such as .gov and .edu. These sites are known by the search engines to contain high quality content and they will reward you for linking to them.

Many ecommerce sites will link out to legal guidelines on .gov sites. This is a great way for them to explain to their visitors legal implications that may be relevant to their product. Many sites also link to a relevant Wikipedia page. Wikipedia is one of the trusted domains which Google will appreciate you linking to. It shows that you are confident in your sites appeal to point your visitors elsewhere.

Linking Rules

When linking out from your site there are a few rules which should be followed to make sure you don’t get penalised. All links to irrelevant or suspect content should have the “nofollow” attribute added to them. You should also open all outward bound links in a new window to further increase the chance of your site visitor returning.

By linking out to relevant content you are offering your users more than your site alone. This is great for a user point of view and from a search engine spider point of view.
